Exteranal Door Locks

When you need your external door locks changing or upgrading choosing the right lock for your door can be quite a daunting task. This is mainly due to the vast range of locks available on todays market, all id various sizes and levels of security. This is why our team at Pontefract Locksmith Solutions have put together a helpful guide on the top 5 external door locks used in the UK.

Dead Blots – Deadbolts are heavy duty locks that work by extending a bolt into the wall. They are completely separate from the door handle. If installed correctly these locks are incredibly effective. It is also important that the strike plate for this lock is installed correctly to allow the bolt to go all the way into the wall.

Keyed Locks – Not all doors are suitable for the use of a dead lock and if you have one of those doors then the next best thing is a keyed lock. These are most commonly found on patio, and sliding doors. The locks that come pre fitted to these doors are not the most secure and are very susceptible to wear and tear. A keyed lock will offer a high level of protection for these types of doors particularly if you install them both at the top and bottom of the door.

Electronic Locks – This type of lock is relatively new to the market and does not require the use of a traditional key, instead they use a key fob or passcode entered into a keypad or even a smart phone! This is a rather high-tech security upgrade, they work great and are becoming increasingly more common, particularly in newly built homes.

Door Handle Locks – This is one of the most commonly used locks in the UK. When these locks are used alongside other measures such as deadbolt locks, they become an extremely effective security measure.

Combination locks – These locks come in two different types, they can either be electronic or mechanical. The electronic lock usually uses a passcode or pin similar to a smart phone and the mechanical locks use either a twist dial or push button.
